Construction Manager - Sphere Tanks
We are looking for a field-proven, grit-and-steel Construction Manager to take full ownership of the site erection, assembly, and mechanical completion of spherical storage tanks (Hortonspheres) in the UAE. This is a pure site-execution role. You will be responsible for managing heavy lift cranes, rigging teams, fit-up crews, and hundreds of specialized welders. Because these spheres use high-thickness steel plates, you must have direct experience managing the physical challenges of heavy-wall
- Heavy Rigging & Plate Erection: Personally oversee the lifting schedules and crane setups (including heavy crawler cranes) for erecting the sphere’s structural legs, temporary central derrick towers, and the heavy, formed "orange-peel" shell plates.
- Fit-Up & Alignment: Drive the crew to achieve flawless plate-to-plate alignment and fit-up on high-thickness joints before welding begins. You are responsible for managing structural distortion and ensuring the sphere is perfectly round.
- Welding Workforce Productivity: Manage and push the daily productivity of high-pressure coded welders. Ensure the site crews are actively maintaining continuous pre-heating on the thick steel plates to keep the welding momentum moving safely without cracking.
- Scaffolding & High-Altitude Safety: Direct the erection of massive internal and external scaffolding systems or rope-access setups required for workers to safely weld and inspect the sphere at height.
- Site Heat Treatment (PWHT) Execution: Coordinate the physical site logistics for turning the completed sphere into a temporary furnace. Manage the sub-contractor handling the high-velocity burners, fuel lines, and insulation blankets for the full-scale baking cycle.
- Subcontractor & Labor Driving: Be the main driving force on-site. Manage sub-contractors tightly, resolve daily labor bottlenecks, clear material staging issues, and ensure the physical construction matches the daily schedule targets.
Requirements
- Field Experience: 12+ years of heavy mechanical site construction experience, with a proven track record as the lead CM on-site for at least 2 completed Spherical Storage Tank projects.
- The "High Thickness" Factor: Must demonstrate experience physically managing thick-plate steel fabrication where on-site PWHT (Post-Weld Heat Treatment) was successfully executed.
- Rigging Mastery: Deep understanding of heavy lifting plans, rigging tackle, and multi-crane tandem lifts for large pressure vessel segments.
- Leadership Style: Tough, field-tested leader who knows how to manage large labor workforces and subcontractors under tight deadlines and harsh site conditions.
